Solo Recitals

What is a solo recital?

Solo recitals are for advanced students, age 12+, who can perform 30-45 minutes of music. Recitals include both solo and ensemble pieces. Students are selected by their teacher for solo recitals months in advance. Additional fees are not included in a solo recital. We only ask parents to cover any fees associated with their venue of choice.

What is the preparation process?

Students are normally eligible for solo recitals around two years of lessons. The teacher and student will pick out the repertoire for their recital and begin a practice plan. Preparation takes around 6-9 months. During this time, a date will be selected for the recital and parents will book their venue of choice to host the recital. Lessons are spent preparing the student's repertoire, and extra rehearsals may be needed, especially if performing with guest musicians. Similar to regular studio recitals, these invited guests are local professional musicians.

Similar to the process at a university music program, students must pass a hearing to be able to perform their recital. A hearing is a mock recital, where the student performs their recital in full to their teacher and/or another teacher. Hearings occur one month before the recital date, so students are given enough time to apply constructive feedback to their pieces. A student can only fail a hearing if their music is extremely unprepared or will not be ready in time. The teacher will be able to predict this in lessons before the hearing, but hearings are served as a checkpoint for students to have their music completely learned. They also serve as a "mock" recital to help with nerves.

Once the students pass the hearing, their recital poster will be made to help promote their recital. Recital posters are made with a headshot of the student. Headshots are complimentary by our teacher, Mariah Gomez. Students are free to get creative with their headshot and create a "theme" for their recital.

Receptions are welcome after the student's recital for guests to enjoy and further celebrate the student. Similar to venue costs, we ask that parents provide the food and drink cost of a reception, should they choose to have one.

Solo recitals are an amazing achievement! If your child is interested in having a student recital, please let their teacher know so we can begin the planning process.
